Abbey Architectural Completes £300K Replacement Window and Door Refurbishment of Queen’s Hospital, Burton on Trent in 2024
Project Overview:
Abbey Architectural, working with Selcon Consultants Ltd., successfully secured the competitive tender for the Derby and Burton Hospital NHS Trust. The project involved replacing existing aluminium windows and doors in a hospital ward building. The installation featured anthracite grey PVCu windows and aluminium doors. The main phase included replacing windows from the first to the fourth floor, followed by the ground-floor windows and doors. The total project value was £300,000.
Client Requirements:
At tender for the work Abbey Architectural proposed and tested an innovative installation method to reduce costs and avoid disturbing asbestos in the existing lower window panels. This approach involved retaining the lower panels and replacing only the upper portions of the windows, with custom powder-coated aluminium panels cloaking the lower sections. The in-house design team provided detailed drawings for client review and approval before proceeding to manufacture.
The installed windows were Rehau PVCu with a smooth anthracite grey finish, featuring top-hung opening vents with projection friction stays and linked folding openers for enhanced security. High-performance 6mm Suncool 70/35 glazing was used to minimise solar gain, while 6.8mm clear laminated inner panels improved acoustic performance. Existing secondary glazing was removed and the areas made good during installation.
The replacement works were completed without requiring ward closures. A carefully coordinated installation program ensured minimal disruption, with rooms made available sequentially and all work conducted behind custom screens to maintain privacy and security.
Products Used:
- Windows: Rehau Total 70 System with a 5-chambered outer frame, providing a thermal performance of 1.4 W/m²K without compromising structural integrity.
- Doors and Screens: Kawneer Series 451PT thermally broken aluminium framing system with KAS sliding doors, featuring Record STA 20 automatic bi-parting operators. These included IR radar for two-way traffic and full-height pocket screens to protect the moving door leaves, meeting European Standards BS EN 16005 and BS 7036.
This approach ensured a modern, energy-efficient, and cost-effective solution while meeting client expectations and maintaining the functionality of the hospital wards throughout the project.
