Abbey Architectural Completes the Replacement of Curtainwall, Window and Doors at Southwell Racecourse after Flood Damaged in 2024 whilst keeping the Racehorses Happy!
Project Overview:
Abbey Architectural successfully completed the replacement of curtain walls, windows, and doors at Southwell Racecourse following severe flood damage at the end of 2023. Working in partnership with Bowmer and Kirkland Property Services Ltd and Bentley Rowe Ltd, Abbey Architectural secured the competitive tender for this £200,000 project. The work spanned multiple areas, beginning in the Jockey’s Weighing Room, moving through the main Grandstand, and concluding with the installation of automatic entrance doors at the on-site hotel.
Client Requirements:
Due to the sensitivity of racehorses to high-visibility vests and other disruptions, the installation schedule was carefully planned to avoid race days.
Glazing specifications varied depending on location. Standard windows and doors featured 6mm clear Pilkington S1 toughened double-glazed units with a center-pane U-value of 1.00 W/m²K. In the Grandstand and Hospitality areas, 6mm grey antisun toughened double-glazed units were installed to minimise solar gain and ensure comfort for guests.
The project incorporated a range of high-performance systems.
Products Used:
– Windows: Kawneer Series AA720 thermally broken systems with top-hung opening vents, projection friction stays, silver key espagnolette locking handles, trickle ventilation, and restrictors.
– Curtain Walling: Kawneer Series AA100 thermally broken stick system with top and bottom fixing brackets.
– Doors: Kestrel Aluminium Systems manual and automatic swing doors with Record DFA127 automatic swing operators, IR radar for two-way traffic, and silver anodized door barriers. The doors also featured 8mm toughened glass for added protection, complying with European Standards BS EN 16005 and BS 7036.
The work was completed efficiently, adhering to all building regulations while minimising disruptions to the racecourse operations and its resident racehorses.
